Indivisible Review

Indivisible is a game in the genre of action-RPG-platformer, dedicated to the adventures of Ajna in search of revenge, then-herself and, finally, for the sake of saving everything. The very spirit of the game is imbued with the influence of South Asian culture, or rather Buddhist, to be more precise. The game is developed by Lab Zero Games, known primarily for making Skullgirls, a very high-quality fighting game.

Plot. I will say right away that this is anime in its most classic incarnation. In particular this relates to the story. For the first ten minutes, I didn’t understand what was going on at all, and I just admired the beautifully drawn opening scene. And only after a while, through dialogues, I began to immerse myself in the history of the local world and become imbued with sympathy (or antipathy) to the characters.

The game tells the story of a little girl Ajna, who lived in her lovely village and trained under the guidance of her father. He taught her meditation techniques and martial arts. Once a village was attacked by an unknown force, which killed all its inhabitants and burned down the houses. Fortunately, Ajna was training in a nearby forest at the time. Returning home and seeing the scale of the disaster, the girl suddenly discovered a unique ability to absorb people into the depths of her consciousness and find allies in them. Its first «victim» was a young warrior who seemed to be on the side of evil. After kicking his ass, Ajna plunged the guy into her consciousness and was able to summon him in further battles.

This is the tie. And then the girl traveled to numerous locations, met a lot of new characters, learned about herself and looked for ways to save the world.

The story is served in the form of cut scenes and dialogues. There are no questions about the cut scenes — the voice acting is good, the drawing is gorgeous. I especially liked the pre-rendered cut scenes — they look more like a series of cool anime series. And those that are served on the game engine, look like a normal dialogue, from which they differ only in the presence of voice acting. Yes, simple dialogues in the game have only to read, apparently not enough budget.

Gameplay. The gameplay is divided into two parts. The first is research in the form of a traditional platformer. You run through the levels, jump, get to the right places, communicate with characters and look for enemies. The second part is an action game consisting of turn-based and real-time elements interspersed with cooldown mechanics and team battles. I know it sounds complicated, so I’ll tell you more about each gameplay part.

Jumping on walls is unreasonably simple — you press the same button, without timings and directions.

Exploration.  The levels are varied. Both in terms of setting and in terms of learning. Some are simple to the point of horror — you run forward, jump a couple of times and that’s it. Others are filled with traps and problems like » Well, how do I jump in?!!». The setting, as promised by the developers, consists of Asian and middle Eastern motifs. The heroine visits Eastern cities, jungles, deserts, etc.

There are enemies, neutral characters,and allies along the way. With neutrals, everything is clear — they stand still, do nothing, communicate in dialogues and suggest where to move next. Allies are characters that Ajna absorbs and joins to its spiritual team.

The enemies are weirdos, familiar to anyone who has encountered Eastern mythology. They are ugly, but at the same time unique and fascinating. It is noteworthy that at almost every level, the enemies are completely different. Usually in such games, it is customary to make reskin of opponents, creating the illusion of diversity. But here the models are completely different, and the skills differ. There is no point in dwelling on each type of opponent in detail, otherwise the review will be too long. But I will note that there are weak mobs, large mini-bosses and big bosses. Weak mobs are unworthy and spit in their direction, mini-bosses are able to hang a cradle, and big bosses break their necks at any time suitable for them.

Fight.  Although exploring the world and reading dialogues take up most of the time, it is the fights that are the highlight of this game. I have already briefly explained what elements it consists of. Now read more.

After meeting with the enemy, the battle phase begins. At this point, several of her allies (up to four people) fly out of the character. At first, they are few, so there is no choice, but in the future they can be changed, create a team to your liking.

On one side of the battle arena is the team of protagonists, on the other-their enemies. The action is both step-by-step and real-time. Step-by-step is determined by cooldowns — after each hit, the hero begins to roll back and can only defend himself. Enemies can respond at any time. In addition, the ability buttons may be the same for two or more characters at once. Therefore, sometimes they attack simultaneously, complementing each other.

This is where the depth of gameplay is felt. Characters need to be selected as a team in such a way that their abilities are as effective as possible in combination with others. You should also remember about cooldowns and squeeze abilities in the correct order. Otherwise, there will be moments when the entire team is motionless and can only tolerate enemy attacks. Blocking — another important point, it needs to be pressed with perfect accuracy to repel most of the damage.

As a result, fights consist of attempts to balance the abilities of the characters, maximum concentration on what is happening, and a certain amount of luck. After all, sometimes enemies slow down or attack too stupidly — their mistakes need to be used, there may not be another chance. At first, it seems that the game is simple-you click on all the buttons in a row and are surprised at the lethality of your team. But after an hour on the levels there are strong rivals, which can only be defeated by endurance and skills. By the way, some enemies can be jumped even in the research mode, if you do not want to spend time on them.

Ax is Ajna’s best friend. Hits enemies, breaks obstacles on the way, helps to climb on rocks. You can also use it to cut sausage. Probably 🙂

The atmosphere and sounds. This is a two-dimensional drawn anime. Pre-rendered cut scenes are great and drawn by very talented artists. In the game itself, the picture is simpler, the background is sometimes lazy, and the animation is slightly jerky. After three-dimensional platformers and fighting games, it seems that the game does not reach the level of 2019. But after a while you sink into the atmosphere and forget about everything in the world.

The music is pleasant and very diverse. The audience liked it so much that the developers released a separate DLC, which contains 61 tracks from the game. In-game sounds are standard for the genre. The voice acting in cut scenes is decent, although sometimes the voices are not very suitable for the characters. But this is rather a tribute to the style, because only in anime a muscular dude with a huge blade can sound like a teenager 🙂

The developers did their best for their audience. Other gamers either got into the game, or they didn’t. Although I am not a fan of such projects, I will not scold the game — it is fascinating, gives positive emotions, and does not waste time. I advise everyone who is tired of standard two-dimensional fighting games and loves the Asian game style.
